The Burgo Group sustains and promotes the positive use of forestry resources and contributes, through its company policies, to the elimination of illegal logging.
In reaching these goals, the Burgo Group, as well as using only using fibres from forests managed in full compliance of local laws, is also actively involved with the following criteria and actions.
- Respect for the rights of indigenous people to use the forests – to respect and ensure that the rights of local communities are respected regarding those people who have relied on forests for their livelihoods and their cultures over the centuries. The protection of economic rights of use of forestry resources is fundamental in guaranteeing fair distribution of our planet’s wealth.
- Respect for the rights of indigenous populations – the Group believes that sustainability also means the defence of rights, cultures and traditions of the minority: our riches are not to become detrimental to the cultural riches of the planet; wealth comes from the maintenance of diversity and the protection of minorities.
- The promotion of forestry workers’ rights and relationships with indigenous communities – a commitment to ensure that forestry management has a positive impact on surrounding communities: guarantees regarding safety at work, safeguards for the rights of workers and the presence of social facilities in the area. It is fundamental that the use of our forests has a positive impact on the social system that is involved
- Guaranteeing the biological sustainability of forests – wood is a key resource for the Group and one of our planet’s riches; forestry activities are to be managed in such a way as to ensure that this resource is maintained for future generations. Logging and forestry activities are to be programmed so as to ensure a positive rate of growth without damaging the ecosystem. Investments are to be guaranteed to allow for the future sustainability of the environmental system and fibres used in manufacturing are not to come from forests with a high conservation value or where threatened bio – systems exist.
